Operating since 1775, the House of Houbigant is the only fragrance house that has existed through four centuries of history.
Through these centuries, the perfumers of the House of Houbigant have made groundbreaking discoveries in the formulation of perfumes that have revolutionized forever the way perfumes are constructed. It is not an exaggeration to say that, without the House of Houbigant, modern perfumery as we know it today would not exist.
It all began with just a basket of flowers. One day in Paris in 1775, a young man, Jean-Francois Houbigant, hung a hand painted sign of a basket of flowers over his little shop in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. From the start his fragrances found favour with royalty and the nobility. Houbigant taught the titled women at the Court of Versailles how to perfume their fans so that just a fragrant flutter would send out a romantic message.

FIGUIER NOIR: A WORD FROM THE NOSE
I had this opportunity, to live in the countryside in Grasse region where I had all the time in the world to contemplate the passage of time and to welcome the arrival of sunny days. From the first heat, the fig trees yield a bitter and sensual perfume, harsh and voluptuous. A reassuring and elegant olfactory combination, yet so contradictory, that the idea came to me to write a men's fragrance. Sitting in the shade of the black fig tree whose gnarled branches embraced me like long, sensitive arms, refreshed by the caress of the wind that gently crumpled the leaves above my head, so large that they reminded me of a giant’s hands, I guessed beyond the bark, the gentle, soothing pulsation of the sap. Nose stretched, hands abandoned to the ground, eyes closed, I let myself be carried away by the waves of contrary but disturbing scents. Numb and blissful, I immediately went back to my workshop to keep my fickle harvest and, in front of my scale, I formulated a brief series of fragrant ingredients. Because, you probably know, men like to define themselves in a few words. Céline Ellena.
Men Collection
Since its inception, Houbigant has perfumed the men who have marked history: from Louis XVI to Napoleon to the Russian Tsars. In Houbigant’s ledgers it is recorded that during the 100-day campaign Napoleon stopped at the Houbigant store to fill his trunks with perfume before continuing his march to regain power. Today, as in the past, Houbigant puts men in the spotlight with a collection dedicated to them, created around precious raw materials and sophisticated pairings.

Top Notes: The initial impression of Figuier Noir is likely a blend of green and bitter notes, evoking the scent of fig leaves crumpled under the sun. This opening could also feature a touch of citrus or aromatic herbs to enhance the freshness and contrast with the fig's natural sweetness.
Heart Notes: As the fragrance develops, the heart reveals the fig itself, capturing both its milky sweetness and subtle green nuances. The perfumer's description suggests a sensual and voluptuous character, possibly incorporating floral or woody notes to create depth and complexity. This "contradictory" nature might involve spices like black pepper or warm woods like cedar to balance the fig's sweetness.
Base Notes: The long-lasting dry down of Figuier Noir likely features a blend of earthy and woody notes, creating a warm and reassuring base. Ingredients like patchouli, sandalwood, or musk could provide a grounding element, ensuring the fragrance's longevity and adding a touch of masculinity to complement the fig's natural sweetness. The overall effect is intended to be elegant and subtly captivating, reflecting the quiet strength of the fig tree.
