As a nutritional supplement it is a natural source of many nutrient phosphatides, including phosphatidyl-choline, phosphatidyl-inositol, phosphatidylserine and others. The most important physiological function of lecithin may be its role in cellular, mitochondrial and plasma biochemical processes. Phospholipids are important components found in the structure of all cell membranes. Lecithin, an important source of phospholipids, is necessary for all living cells in the human organism. Cell membranes, which regulate the nutrients that may or may not enter the cell, are largely composed of lecithin.
Without lecithin, the cell membranes would harden. The cell membrane offers protection against oxidative damage.
