Copper is found in all tissues of our bodies and is involved in the formation of red blood cells because it helps transport iron into cells. Adequate copper also contributes to the functioning of the immune system and protects cells from oxidative stress and free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage our body's cells and are associated with premature ageing. Copper also supports healthy metabolism by helping the body convert food into energy.
The body cannot produce copper on its own and must therefore obtain it from a healthy, varied diet containing copper-rich foods such as liver, nuts and seeds, beans and seafood. When the diet is rich in zinc, it is even more important to make sure you get adequate copper because zinc acts as an antagonist to copper.
