Devoted to dressing her dolls for her own personal version of the Academy Awards as a child, American designer Anna Sui knew from a young age what course she wanted her life to take . She moved to New York after high school to attend Parsons School of Design and found work with a variety of sportswear companies upon her graduation. Sui’s big break came in 1980 when the six pieces she presented at the Boutique Show was immediately ordered by Macy’s with one later being featured in a New York Times advertisement. That same year Sui launched her own business which she ran out of her apartment for the next decade.
The 1990s were a time of growth for Sui. She premiered her first runway show in 1991 and moved her business and showroom to it’s currently location in the Garment District. Her first boutique was opened the next year and she won the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion talent in 1993. The first Anna Sui boutiques in Asia opened in 1997 which was also the year she premiered her first collection of shoes.
In 1999 Sui launched her fragrance line in conjunction with Wella AG of Germany. Her first women’s perfume entitled Anna Sui, is a whimsical scent perfect for daytime wear. Many other fragrances followed with the most notable being the fresh smelling Live Your Dream, the exotic Night of Fancy, the romantic Sui Love, the fun Rock Me! series and the glamorous Dolly Girl series.
